Born Giorgos Vasiliou in Athens Greece in 1971, Alkaios showed his love of music and sport at a young age. He played soccer at Panathinaikos FC Junior club, before turning to karate and later basketball. At the age of 16, he dropped out of school and received a degree as an electrician.
His first TV appearance was in 1989 on the reality show ‘Ela Sto Fos’. The show featured 1,500 aspiring actors, singers and dancers. These 1,500 were narrowed down to 20, with Alkaios being one of them. In the summer of 1989, he auditioned and won a part in Minoa Volonakis’ play Sofoklis’ ‘Antigone’. Premiering at the ancient theatre in Epidavros, he was the youngest actor to be cast in a historic play and perform in a historic theatre. He then changed his focus from theatre to music, auditioning and getting a concert spot at the club Tunnel.
In 1991, he toured Greece and participated in the Thessaloniki Song Contest, with the song ‘De Me Theleis Tolmiro’. He won the award for the best vocals, knocking out newcomer Sakis Rouvas. This is when he changed his name from Giorgos Vasiliou to Alkaios. He then began writing songs for other Greek artists. One of his most notable songs was ‘Opa Opa’ for Notis Sfakianakis.
His debut album ‘Me Ligo Trak’ was released in 1992. The single ‘Ti Ti’ became a huge hit in Greece and was one of the first Greek songs to mix oriental sounds with Western pop. During the next 9 years he produced many gold and platinum albums and performed around the world.
In May 2010 Alkaios and friends represented Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘Opa’. He finished in 8th place.
